the hub: Transforming sports, events and recreation in South Taranaki
the hub, South Taranaki District Council's bold vision for a multi-events centre at Hicks Park in Hawera, is becoming a reality.
Work will commence early in 2008 to replace the present de-centralised sporting facilities with a $22.7 million complex that the whole district can be proud of.
The Council has committed $14.87 million to the project with the balance being raised by the South Taranaki community. National and regional community and charitable trusts are expected to provide significant funding, while sports clubs and bodies, district community organisations, businesses and other groups are already demonstrating their support for the project.

About South Taranaki
South Taranaki, along with Stratford and New Plymouth, are the three autonomous local government districts, which make up the Taranaki region in the central North Island of New Zealand. South Taranaki is home to 26,500 people who live and work in the district’s small- and medium-sized towns, and on some of New Zealand's most productive farmland.
Hawera, the administrative and geographical centre of South Taranaki, is the largest population centre and is home to approximately 12,000 people or 45 percent of the district’s total population. Other population centres include Eltham and Patea, each with about 4000 residents while the Egmont Plains area around Mt Taranaki has about 6516 residents. All told, about 75 percent of the district's population lives within 25 minutes drive of Hawera.
South Taranaki’s catchphrase is "Real Energy" and that doesn't just apply to the region's major on- and off-shore gas and oil resources. Wedged between Mt Taranaki's majestic cone and the rugged coastline of the Tasman Sea, South Taranaki boasts sufficient outdoor pursuits to expend the energy of even the most hyperactive local or visitor.
The district’s agricultural lands are intensively farmed; its fertile plains form one of the most productive dairy regions in the world. Dairying is at the heart of the local economy, courtesy of the Southern Hemisphere's largest single-site milk processing factory which is situated 3kms south of Hawera.
