Brand fundraising launched in style

A fun DVD featuring South Taranaki at work and play proved a hit at the launch of the hub brand and fundraising campaign on April 17. More than 80 people enjoyed the hub launch party, co-hosted by the Council and Taranaki Chamber of Commerce as a BA5 event.

Mayor Mary Bourke unveiled the hub brand, saying it was the result of a thorough process that involved working with South Taranaki focus groups, brand specialists and designers to come up with a name and look that reflects the district-wide importance of this project while also incorporating its multi-purpose role in catering for sports, events and leisure.

the hub logo uses South Taranaki District Council's lively
blue and gold-orange while the tag line, ' It all happens here! '
indicates that the possible uses for the venue are virtually
unlimited and include regular district sports practices and
events, family outings and celebrations, regional and national
sports tournaments, concerts, expos, hobbyist gatherings.

It is envisaged that the venue will be a district hub, with
people drawn from around South Taranaki while it can also act as
a centre for sports coaching with outreach programmes to district
communities.

Meet David Bruce – Fundraiser

My enthusiasm for the hub parallels a personal wish to see this district prosper.

As the editor of the Star I have a watching brief over the whole South Taranaki district from Waitotara to Warea and into the deep hinterland to the east. That overview has given me the privilege of seeing much of what and who make this district tick - to applaud its successes and at times grieve for it losses.

Among the losses that concern me is that of the young people who are potentially the district's future - and the loss of retail, commercial and industrial business to surrounding centres.

There is inevitability too much of this - we can understand that greener pastures and educational opportunities will always lure our young folk away - but it would be nice to attract some of them back to take up opportunities in our own district. And it would be nice to attract others, who may have never been here before, to share the district's opportunities.

Retail and industrial loss is insidious, economies and the convenience of travel have already "closed down" most of our district's small villages and diminished our towns.

Retail "leakage" turns even Hawera, the district's centre, into a virtual weekend ghost town.

Our only counter to these losses is to build on what we have, to move forward with the times. In the same way that the portfolio of a desirable home today includes many factors that were not there two or three decades ago - microwave, DVD player even aluminium joinery. The portfolio of a desirable modern town and district has also changed. Big box retail stores, commercial vivacity, restaurants and seven-day cafes, modern healthcare, educational, sporting and recreational facilities as well as vocational opportunities are part of that portfolio. As an ingredient to the district's future, I am backing the hub.

Ahoy me hearties!

All ye lads and wenches, be prepared to board the good ship Cinema 2 in Hawera on Thursday May 24 for a rollicking good time at the South Taranaki premiere of the long-awaited Pirates of the Caribbean 3!

Avast! You’ll be contributing to the hub treasure so start digging out your pirate outfits now if you don’t want to be keel-hauled …and keep an eye on the Star for Cap’n Dave’s announcement about ticket sales and prices. The whole thing’s a cunning plan hatched by the Star Social Club’s band of brigands.

Friday 13th kick-starts fundraising

Friday 13 th April proved an auspicious date for the first big community fundraising event for the hub. More than 300 danced the night away to the music of popular Hawera band Accumen, kick-starting the fundraising effort to the tune of $5000-plus.

Cricketers gets first runs on the board

Rough Habits Hawera United Cricket Club came out to bat for the hub with a $10,000 cheque presented to Mayor Mary at the launch function. United’s Steve Bachelor said the $10,000 opening contribution should be seen as a “buy in to a very exciting development that will benefit not only sportsmen and women but the wider community”. And United president Malcolm Greenhill challenged other sporting codes and groups who will benefit from the hub to follow suit.

Business donor: ‘Make it the best’

South Taranaki businessman Clarke Weir hopes his $2000 contribution will encourage others to get out their cheque books. He says it’s important that the facility is the best the district can provide and he doesn’t want to see the amenities that should be available curtailed for lack of money

Now for the process

The detailed information about the hub required for the Council’s Resource Consent process is being prepared and application is expected to be lodged in May.

Booklet spreads the word

An eight-page booklet produced for the hub launch has been proving a hit with groups and individuals keen to find out more about the $20 million project. the hub news includes architects’ concept drawings and two pages of facts about the project, plus an order form for tee shirts with the hub logo. Email Sally Flintoff at the Council or call her on 0800 111 323 for a booklet or to order your shirt.

How can I help?

We’re aiming high! We’re going to deliver a sports & leisure complex that will serve many generations to come. This project needs people who are passionate about South Taranaki to contribute time, ideas, and cash. Together we can achieve a facility that everyone in the district can be proud of by a series of steps, big and small. Please call a member of our team to talk about how you can be involved.

Our hub team are also keen to talk about the project to community and sports groups, large and small, around the district. They’ve developed a visually engaging and informative presentation, so if your organisation has an AGM, coffee morning or other get-together coming up, please call Gerard or Ross.
