Introduction
Kia ora and welcome to our Hub electronic newsletter.
This is the first issue in what will be a monthly publication to keep you informed about the progress, fundraising efforts and fantastic events that are happening around the Hub.

Introducing Christine Ryan - Fundraising Administrator.
Christine Ryan is the hub Fundraising Administrator. She came on board late November 2007 and is working 20 hours a week for the hub.
As well as running the administration and record- keeping side of fundraising, Christine is out in the community spreading the word.
Christine and husband Paul moved to Hawera two years ago. They came from Auckland where Christine spent a big part of her working life with NZ Post, most recently as Auckland-based Regional Co-ordinator of the Electoral Enrolment Centre.
When husband Paul won the Principal’s job at Hawera High School and after 27 years as JAFAs (Just Another Fabulous Aucklander, she says) she found herself with the daunting prospect of a move to the much quieter life of South Taranaki .
Determined to avoid being pigeon-holed as “just the Principal’s wife” Christine became involved in lots of community activities including STAGE Gallery, Fast Forward Hawera , and helping organise the Tom O’Toole seminar and Mary Bourke’s farewell.
She says she soon grew to appreciate the benefits of small town life – “no traffic hassles, no parking meters and friendly people.”
She has certainly been involved in the community, helping with the Holden Bullride, one of the hub’s major fundraising events last December, and more recently with the More FM Women’s Event and Children’s Triathlon.
In her ‘spare time’, Christine likes to do aqua aerobics, yoga and generally keep fit as well as do book reviews on Coast Radio and sing in the Hawera Women’s Club music circle. She finds time to promote the Gallery on radio and has also had her arm twisted to be on to the Gallery Committee. Who said living in the country is dull?!
Christine says she is excited about having the opportunity to work with a project so important to the community as the hub.
“I see the hub as a vital piece of infrastructure which this district needs to ensure that it is a vibrant and attractive place where people choose to live, work and play. It is facilities like the hub which will support economic growth and population retention – attracting more Aucklanders like me to settle here... that’s if you want us lol.”
Christine (christine.ryan@stdc.govt.nz) is the person you should contact if you want to get involved, make a donation, or just find out more about the hub.

Stage one of South Taranaki’s the hub complex officially got underway on Monday the 3rd of March,2008 with a blessing and groundbreaking ceremony at Hicks Park, Hawera.
The site was blessed by Ngati Ruanui kaumatua, Sid Kershaw. South Taranaki Mayor, Ross Dunlop, turned the first sod with a specially commissioned spade donated by the Star newspaper.
“This is a momentous occasion,” said Mayor Dunlop. “All the work and planning is finally coming to fruition. the hub will be a sport, leisure and events centre that all residents in South Taranaki, young and old, will use and be proud of.”
Work progressing ahead of schedule
Construction of the hub began in March and thanks to the great summer weather things are well on track for stage one to be completed by the end of June.
The netball pavilion and toilet facilities are almost complete and we hope to have the courts and car park sealed by the end of May.
In conjunction with Netball Taranaki we are planning to have a grand opening of the stage one facilities towards the end of July - more details of this will follow in our next newsletter.

Another hurdle was crossed recently when the hub received its resource consent on 1 May. The resource consent application was heard on 9 April by an independent commissioner.
A contractor for stage two (construction of the new indoor courts, function area and grandstand) will be appointed in mid July with work anticipated to start in early August. If everything runs smoothly stage two should be finished by November 2009.

Fundraising nears the million dollar mark.
With the start of construction fundraising is really starting to gain momentum and as we put this newsletter together we are just shy of our first million dollars from fundraising either committed or pledged.
The Hub project in its entirety is a $23 million project. With the South Taranaki District Council contributing $15 million we need to raise $8 million from other sources.
The New Zealand Lottery Grants Board made one of its larger donations to the Hub with a contribution of $500,000 from its lottery community facilities fund. Other contributors and sponsors include:
