Christmas Greetings from the Hub Team
As we look forward to the festive season and a well-deserved break, we want to wish all of our sponsors and supporters a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2009. Thank you all for your support through the year and we look forward to working with you again next year as we strive to achieve our goal of $8m.
Progress on the building
You’ll be pleased to know that construction is progressing extremely well and a lot of activity has occurred since our last newsletter.
In August, the Stage one area of the netball/tennis courts and the new car park and entranceway from Waihi Road was completed. We have had a number of good, positive comments about having nice new facilities now.
In preparation for being able to start the new main facility (Stages 2 and 3), we needed to relocate the Alpine Club building and to demolish the old existing Produce Hall.
The opportunity arose for us to purchase the Ngati Ruanui Sports Centre, which we decided to relocate and refurbish to provide a Cricket Club pavilion. The completion of the cricket pavilion has been well received and the official opening of the Cricket Club building is planned for Saturday 10 January 2009 .
Work on the main facility (Stages 2 and 3) began in September, with the main contracting tender being awarded to Wanganui firm Wells and Wadsworth. 1 October was the demolition of the old Southern Rugby clubrooms and the changing areas underneath. A temporary wall was put up at the end of the gymnasium building to allow the court to continue to be used throughout the construction of the new courts.
Over the past weeks, a large amount of metal has been transferred to the site. The steel roof and supporting structure has been prefabricated and transported to the site. By the time you receive this newsletter, the roof support structure has been lifted into place (see photos below).
Work that is going to occur over the next few months include; the roof will be going on, concrete panel walls will be erected, concrete floors to be poured. Watch this space!

TSB joins Hub
We are thrilled to be able to announce the TSB Community Trust have been very generous in their contribution to the Hub and have become Founding Partners. Following is the media release from last month.
"Hub receives major funding boost from TSB Community Trust "
The Hub, South Taranaki ’s new sports, events and recreation facility at Hicks Park , Hawera, has received the largest grant in the latest round of grants given out by the TSB Community Trust.
The Hub, one of 10 successful applicants, has been allocated $1 million by the Trust each year for 3 years. The grant is pledged subject to the Trust receiving an application each financial year with all appropriate documentation and the project progressing to the Trust’s satisfaction.
Nearly 50 applications, totalling more than $24 million were received by the TSB Community Trust for its annual grants of more than $50,000, from a total pool of approximately $2.2 million.
South Taranaki Mayor, Ross Dunlop , was absolutely thrilled with the TSB Community Trust’s decision. “The Trust’s grant is a huge boost to our fundraising efforts and means that we can plan and move forward with great confidence,” says Mayor Dunlop.
“The Trust has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting projects that will make a real difference in our region and I look forward to working with the Trust in the coming months as a key Hub founding partner.”
Mayor Dunlop also thanked the local community and other sponsors for their support. “Over $1.2 million has been raised from the South Taranaki community and other businesses and organisations. This is a tremendous effort, particularly during these challenging economic times,” he says. “In total, including the TSB Community Trust’s grant we now have raised or had pledged over $4.2 million, and we are well on our way to reaching our $8 million target needed to complete the project in its entirety.”

Black Tie Event
We held a fabulous evening in October in Hawera with over 200 in attendance with everyone looking very swish. We all enjoyed a sumptuous meal, were entertained by local Repertory, raised around $3,000 with an auction and boogied
the night away with the Mermaids, a great band from Auckland .
We had some great feedback for the evening and thank all our contributors to the event (The Park Motel, Andrew Fage Catering, TGM Design). The evening raised around $9,000 in total.
Future Fundraising Events
The next fundraiser for the Hub will be the Children’s Triathlon being held on Friday 30 January from King Edward Park. All competitors will receive a medal.
Entry forms can be collected from the I-Site or from Shannon Cox at the Council.
You can contact Shannon on 278 0555.
